The Belongings – a leather stamping study of small kept things, Volume I-B
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.
A September study. Shops Waterfall, Volume I-B.
We call this collection The Belongings. A thing turns into a belonging the moment it belongs with someone – so we designed five stamps about the small objects that end up meaning the most, and pressed them into leather to be given.
First, THE FIRST KEY – a skeleton key whose bow is a little gabled house, because every home starts out as a key in somebody's hand. We put it on the keychains, where it waits beside the real one.
Next, EMPTY YOUR POCKETS on the catchall tray – the day's finds drawn up like specimens in a collector's case, a coin and an acorn each in its own ruled compartment, the way a collector would file a good day.
It looks genuinely beautiful on the golden tan tray.
Then, a modest coat of arms for the overnight bag – a toothbrush and a comb crossed like swords above THE ESSENTIALS. The stack renders in warm tan over chestnut.
Then, IT WAS A TUESDAY – a torn calendar leaf with the date left blank, because first steps and good news never book ahead. The journal takes the big days that arrive dressed as ordinary ones, and writes a baby book as gladly as a diary. One copy in pale warm greige, one in navy.
And finally, the one we liked the most. Swallows are the birds that famously return – so a swallow crosses the luggage tags trailing COME BACK SOON, the only send-off worth stamping into leather. The black tag carries the words in gold; pale sea-blue and warm tan take a blind press.
Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.
