The Crossings Collection – Guild, New Hampshire in Leather, Volume II

An August study.

The Crossings Collection is Volume II of our leather studies for Guild, New Hampshire. The first volume listened to the wool; this one walks out to the bridges. Newport, the town that keeps Guild among its villages, raised nineteen covered bridges in its day, six for the road and thirteen for the rail, and the spans still standing speak the language this village's makers already know – over and under until it holds.

First, the luggage tags. The old bridges posted their one law on a board over the portal, so we drew a portal of our own, gable roof over a planked face, the dark mouth showing its lattice against the daylight, and hung WALK YOUR HORSES above the arch. A tag that tells every trip to slow to a walk – one in warm red, one in luggage tan.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

Next, the keychains. New Hampshire keeps a numbered register of its covered bridges, and the rebuilt crossing at Corbin answers to seventeen. We set the numeral inside a lattice border, a small bridge plate for the key ring – one fob in deep rail green, one in golden tan.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

Then the toiletry bags. Eight railroad covered bridges are left in the world, and two of them stand over the Sugar River here, Pier and Wright's, their lattices raised by local carpenters to carry locomotives. The stamp sets a boarded span on granite piers with TWO OF THE LAST EIGHT beneath the current, pressed small into the lower right corner of a warm gray bag stacked on a deep espresso one.

The catchall tray carries the proudest story on the river. Arson took the Corbin Bridge in 1993; Newport voted to build it back in timber and raised the difference itself, and by 1994 the crossing stood again. We drew the whole span with its lattice open to the light and set REBUILT 1994 beneath the water, pressed at generous size into the golden tan tray.

Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.

And finally, the journals, the design we liked the most. A dyer's notebook holds the recipe on one page and the wet proof on the next. So the cover carries a wash line of just-dipped swatches, a windowpane check and a plaid and a stripe and one solid square still dripping, over the words DYED IN THE WOOL – one journal in deep navy, one in dusty rose.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
