Curb & Cornice – a Greenville, South Carolina leather collection, Volume II

An August study. Volume II.
Curb & Cornice is a leather collection for Greenville, South Carolina, gathered on a walk up Main Street – from the bronze mice hiding at the curb to the 1912 cornice seven floors up, with one look past the edge of town.
First, the mice. Nine small bronze mice have hidden along Main Street since 2000, and finding all nine is a local rite of childhood. We set them walking single file down a luggage tag, with NINE ON MAIN overhead.
The black tag carries the nine in gold.
Next, the journals. In 1912 Greenville raised its first skyscraper, seven floors of buff brick over Main Street. We redrew the old tower and set SEVEN STORIES beside its windows – a journal fills the same way, one story on top of another.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
Then the West End, where Greenville's most famous ballplayer earned his nickname by batting in his socks. We stood two bare footprints on home plate and arced GIVE MY BEST above them. One keychain is caramel, the color of an old glove; the other is deep green.
After that, Paris Mountain, seven miles from the curb. We cut its ridge small for the corner of the toiletry bags – an overnight kit for a downtown that keeps a mountain in reach. The stack renders honeyed russet over dark espresso.
And finally, the catchall tray. We drew what a Main Street pocket brings home – a key, a coin, a ticket stub, a matchstick – and wrote EMPTY YOUR POCKETS over the scatter. Whatever lands in the tray joins the drawing.
