Emma & Spring – a Springdale, Arkansas leather collection
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.
An August study – Volume II.
Emma & Spring is a small leather collection rooted in downtown Springdale, Arkansas – named for the avenue and the creek that run through it. Five stamps, pressed across the everyday goods a town actually uses.
First, the fingerpost the collection is named for. Emma Avenue and Spring Creek both run through the middle of downtown, so we mounted them on one post – the avenue pointing one way, the creek the other, and the creek rippling past its foot.
It looks genuinely beautiful. The black tag carries the design in gold.
Next, one for the Rodeo of the Ozarks – a bronc at the top of the buck over the words HOLD ON. A keychain is the thing you hold on to all day, so the advice comes free.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
Then we went to the canning shelf. This was orchard country once, and it put its fruit up by the jarful – so we drew a jar lid straight from above, PACKED FRESH around the ring with an apple at the center, and pressed it small into the corner of the toiletry bags, on a caramel-and-espresso stack.
After that, the long table. For the Street Dinner, downtown lays one table down the middle of Emma Avenue and everybody sits; we drew it from a second-story window, plates and all. A catchall tray is a table for everything your pockets carry.
And finally, LOCAL INDUSTRIES – the title a 1939 post-office mural gave this town's work. We set the words over a hand still drawing its underline, because around here industry begins as a line in somebody's notebook. Pressed on workshop blue and on stone gray.
Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.
