Amar Hussain × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

An August study.

For Amar Hussain.

First, we took the oldest problem in your own luggage tag guide – a carousel of identical suitcases – and solved it the way printmakers do. One suitcase, numbered 1/1. An edition of one.

The black tag carries the 1/1 in gold foil; the warm tan and navy tags take a blind press.

Next, the ticket you have technically been traveling on since the gap year began. Outbound long since used. Return still open.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

Then a spec label for someone who tests gear from the Sahara to Antarctica – sun and dunes above the words, a penguin holding the ice below. The golden tan tag reads as the desert, the pale sea-blue one as the ice. A deep espresso tag sits between the climates.

Next, the carousel joke – five identical suitcases and one of them unmistakably yours. Your guide puts visibility first, so we ran this one on the three loudest leathers in the drawer.

Then we opened your author profile, which keeps count, and counted the 63 countries out in tally marks, five at a time. We pressed it into deep wine and pale greige – the leather has room for more.

And finally, the one we liked the most. Two dots sit a thumb apart on the globe – leaving home and getting home – and the route between them goes the whole way around.

The black-and-white THE LONG WAY HOME globe stamp design created for Amar Hussain's leather luggage tag collection.

Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
