JTM Travel Services × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.
A July study.
JTM Travel Services is an independent leisure and corporate travel agency in Torrington, Connecticut. Jeanne Griffin, its named advisor, has spent more than thirty years planning travel, and the agency's promise is unusually complete: one-of-a-kind vacations and cruises, designed with the client and attended to from the first call until well after the trip ends. Through an affiliation with Travel Experts, which JTM describes as a top-five Virtuoso agency, the network reaches contacts at more than 1,000 Virtuoso-preferred properties in over 100 countries. That is a great deal of world to book from one Connecticut address.
The mark is what asked for the study. A condensed teal JTM holds the lower left, TRAVEL and SERVICES stack beside it in narrow capitals, and two routes sweep around the name from teal into aqua, one crossing behind the top, one completing a low ellipse. Above the letters a flat gold airplane points toward the upper right. The whole identity lives in line, and clean line is what a stamping die loves best. Some marks fight the leather. This one flies over it.
The mark, as found
Pressed lengthwise
Turquoise, a pale sea-blue, follows the teal and aqua of the routes, and indian-summer, a honeyed warm gold, answers the airplane. Black carries the same die in gold foil.
Escape the Ordinary
The site's own metadata promises “Escape the Ordinary, Live your Travel Dreams”, and we took the first clause at its word. Our first sketch kept the full double orbit under the words, but the crossing stroke muddied at tag scale, so the companion breaks the ellipse into four route dashes and sends the airplane off above ESCAPE THE ORDINARY. The plane has already left; the dashes are still catching up.
We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
