From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

An August study.

For La-Z-Boy Incorporated.

First, the warm-up: we pressed the La-Z-Boy Incorporated lockup along a family of luggage tags, lengthwise, the way that script was drawn to run. The deep navy and the pale sea-blue come straight from their own palette; the caramel tag is borrowed from the recliners themselves.

Next, one for the people who move the furniture. A single unbroken line runs the long haul, rising and dipping, and at the far end folds itself into a recliner with the footrest up – END TO END, because the point of moving a chair is that someone finally gets to sit in it. We stamped it into the corner of the toiletry bags, navy over chestnut.

Then, the garage. In 1927, in Monroe, Michigan, two cousins built a reclining chair out of wood slats, and everything since has walked out of that doorway. So the keychain badge carries the garage with its doors swung open and the first chair standing inside – MONROE MICHIGAN above, 1927 below. A key ring felt like the right home for a garage.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather – warm caramel and deep espresso, the browns of that first workshop.

The catchall tray is where everything the pockets carried comes to rest at the end of the day. We drew the chair itself, mid-recline, and set TAKE A LOAD OFF beneath it, pressed at a generous size into the golden tan.

And finally, their own sentence: "Being comfortable brings out the best in us." We set it as a bookplate, with THE BEST IN US carrying the weight, for the journal covers – because the best in us is what the pages are for. Deep navy and pale greige.

It looks genuinely beautiful.
