Sweet Memories Travel × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

A July study.

Sweet Memories Travel is the practice of Jodi Mongold, owner and travel advisor, working out of Phoenix, Arizona. The name carries the whole theory of the trade in three words: itineraries expire, and what a client actually keeps is the memory. An advisor who names her firm for the keeping, and puts her own name on the door beside it, is promising a kind of attention the big booking engines gave up on long ago. We take names like that seriously; they tend to belong to people who answer their own phone.

Her mark is what pulled us in. It runs long and horizontal, a navy oval carrying the SMT monogram inside a slim gold ring, the wordmark set alongside in gold capitals. A small wave line is the single flourish she allows. Ovals were the shape of the old steamer-trunk labels, and for good reason, since a curve survives corners and collisions far better than a point does; pressed into leather, a mark like hers looks as though it has been travelling for decades already.

The mark, as found

Pressed lengthwise

Blueberry and caramel came straight off her identity, blueberry following the navy of the oval and caramel following the gold that rings it. Black carries the gold foil, as it always does.

One scoop of the world

For the companion we let the name order dessert. A single cone points its tip down the tag, its waffle drawn as a few bold diagonals crossed into wide open diamonds. On the rim sits the scoop, and the scoop is the globe, two meridians bowing inside the circle and one latitude crossing below its middle. We tried it clean at first and the globe read as a lollipop; a single soft drip over the left of the rim settled the matter. The short wave from her own lockup floats above, and beneath the tip her name runs in plain capitals.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
