Great Cow Harbor – a Northport leather collection

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.

An August study – Volume I-A.

Northport went by Great Cow Harbor first. We took the old name and designed a small leather collection around it – five stamps for five pieces, every one drawn from the harbor.

First, the name. The village was Great Cow Harbor before the maps settled on Northport, so we stood a cow at the end of a long plank dock and hung the old name over the water. The design runs the length of the luggage tag.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

Next, we minted a fare. A trolley ran between Main Street and the station from 1902, and the rails are still set in the pavement – so the keychain carries a token good for one ride.

The black fob takes the token in gold – as near to brass as leather gets.

Then we launched a pull-toy sloop, wheels and string included, and rated it for the OVERNIGHT VOYAGE – which is the exact job of a dopp kit.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

For the catchall tray, we moored a little boat to a cleat and wrote HOME PORT beneath it. Keys and coins drop anchor here at day's end.

And finally, the journals. A sheet of paper is a few folds from a boat, so the cover's corner carries one, certified SEAWORTHY.
