The Homeward Collection – a Conway, Arkansas leather study, Volume III

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.

An August study. Volume III.

Conway, Arkansas has a habit we admire: when the town loves a thing, it carries it home – an iron bridge once rode a crane to a new lake, and an 1850s cabin stands whole on the courthouse grounds. We pressed five of those stories into leather and named the set THE HOMEWARD COLLECTION.

First, the bridge. Conway's old bowstring span was picked up whole and set down again over Beaverfork Lake, where it goes on doing its one job. We drew it mid-flight, still on the hook, and wrote STILL CROSSING above it – a fine motto for anything that travels. The tags run navy for the lake and warm tan for the road. The black tag carries the stamp in gold.

Next, the dogtrot – two log rooms under one roof with a breezeway open through the middle, built so the summer could pass straight through the house. TWO ROOMS AND A BREEZE, on the fob that holds your own front-door key.

Then, GONE TO THE LAKE – a canoe with the paddle laid down across the gunwales, because the day's rowing is over. The kit stacks navy over chestnut, water over shore.

For the tray, we let Conway's trails do what they do – four paths winding home to one small house, ALL TRAILS LEAD HOME. A catchall earns that motto every evening, when the day's pockets empty into it.

And finally, the one we liked the most. Near the cabin sits a time capsule that stays shut until 2073, and a journal is the same wager – written now, opened later. So the cover says OPEN IN 2073, in deep green and warm tan.
