Marginalia – a leather gift collection for readers and writers

A September study – Waterfall Volume I-D.

Marginalia is a small gift collection for people whose books talk back – readers who annotate, writers who carry a draft everywhere. We borrowed the proofreader's own marks and pressed them into leather.

First, the luggage tags. We sent an open book flying – pages fanned like wings – over the words RESEARCH TRIP, for the reader whose every itinerary is secretly a bibliography. We ran it on golden tan and on deep green. The black tag carries the design in gold foil – the gilt edge of the set.

Next, the keychains. An old printer's manicule – the little pointing hand from the letterpress age – aims straight at WHERE YOU LEFT OFF. Keys and bookmarks do the same work: they hold your place. In deep wine and in pale sea-blue.

Then, the catchall tray. We broke a ruled line mid-thought and set a proofreader's caret beneath the gap, with INSERT HERE spelled out under it – the tray as a standing correction, waiting for whatever the pocket held. On golden tan.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

Then, the dopp kits. A pilcrow above NEW PARAGRAPH sits small in the lower right corner – the mark an editor makes where the story turns, for a bag that gets packed when it does. Blind debossed on a navy and deep brown stack.

And finally, the one closest to the bone. FIRST DRAFT on the journal cover, DRAFT circled in a single editor's stroke – everything inside gets permission to be imperfect first, which is how anything gets finished. On navy and on pale warm greige.
