One Good Mile – a Flowood, Mississippi leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies of real places.

A September study. Volume I-D.

One Good Mile is a small leather collection rooted in Flowood, Mississippi – the paved mile around the Nature Park lake, and the water and timber folded into the town's own name.

First, we read the name Flowood literally – water moving through timber – and cut a white river clean through a stand of black hardwoods, with FLOWOOD set beneath. The black tag carries the gold.

Next, the flower that names the whole state. We opened a magnolia flat across the face and set MAGNOLIA STATE on an arc beneath it.

And finally, the one the collection is named for. The trail around the Nature Park lake runs one good mile through the hardwoods – we drew the lake with its dashed loop into a trailhead medallion and arced ONE GOOD MILE across the crown.

It looks genuinely beautiful.
