One More Cast – a leather gift collection for fly anglers (Volume I-D)

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies. Volume I-D.

A September study.

One More Cast is a small collection of leather gifts for people who fly fish, and for the people who shop for them. Each stamp names a habit an angler recognizes at arm's length, pressed into luggage tags, journals and the rest of the traveling kit.

First, the namesake. Everyone who fishes with someone knows who says it – we stacked ONE MORE CAST in plain capitals and let a line roll out beneath the words into one last open loop, a small dry fly at its tip. One keychain in deep green, one in warm red.

Next, a tag for luggage that travels with a rod tube. One cast unrolls along the whole length of the tag and hands its fly to the phrase – THE FISH ARE ALREADY THERE. The black tag carries the design in gold. The warm tan and deep green tags take a blind deboss.

Then, passports, for the anglers who fly to fish. We drew a compass rose and set a dry fly where the needle belongs, wing pointing due north, above the words NEW WATER. One cover in pale sea-blue for the flats, one in deep espresso for the lodge.

The quiet one goes on the toiletry kits, pressed into the corner. An open fly box with every slot filled but one – the empty slot is the fly that is on the water right now. One kit in navy, one in deep espresso.

For the catchall tray, which receives whatever the river left in a pocket, we arched THE DAY ENDS HERE above a single dry fly at rest – the last thing out of the vest. The tray is golden tan.

And finally, the one we liked the most. A small trout dives back down across two lines of type – slash beneath the jaw, spots crowding toward the tail – and the words finish the thought: THE FISH GOES BACK. THE STORY STAYS. A journal for the angler who releases everything except the memory. One in deep wine, one in warm tan.
