Penny & Pop, Volume I-A – a leather study of childhood candy and glass-bottle soda

Volume I-A – Penny & Pop, a small exhibition from the workshop. A September study.

We built this collection around penny candy and glass-bottle soda. The wrapper and the cap were always the first things thrown away; here they are pressed into leather, which keeps.

First, we let a bottle lose its cap. The crown flies off and the bubbles climb after it; STILL FIZZING stands beneath the neck – a good thing for a luggage tag to say about its owner.

The black tag carries the pop in gold foil, the finish bottle caps actually come in. The poppy red and the pale sea-blue tags take a blind deboss.

Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.

Next, we drew a crown cap at nearly true scale, teeth and all, and set OPEN HERE across the middle – a keychain spends its whole life opening things, so the cap seemed only fair.

On the black fob the cap presses in gold.

Then we gave the toiletry bags the paper sack – top rolled once and one wrapped piece leaning out, with ONE MORE PIECE underneath. Anyone who has ever packed a kit the night before a trip knows the phrase. It sits small in the corner of the navy-over-chestnut stack.

For the catchall tray, we drew the five-dollar box from above: six compartments with a different candy in each, and ONE OF EVERYTHING running underneath. A catchall plays the same game every evening – everything goes in, and it all has to fit.

And finally, the journals. We twisted one candy tight at both ends and set it over the words SWEET NOTHINGS – which is what candy is made of, and what a journal is for.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
