Plant Something – leather studies of Jennings, Louisiana

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of original leather stamping studies.

A September study – Volume I-C.

This is Plant Something, a small leather collection rooted in Jennings, Louisiana – the flat parish horizon, the backyard figs and satsumas, the gourds hung out for the birds. We pressed it into luggage tags and journals, keychains and a catchall tray.

First, the parish itself, run lengthwise along the luggage tags – a dead-flat wetland horizon with one lone tree standing against it, and JENNINGS letterspaced across the sky.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

Next, we put a seedling just breaking ground under the words PLANT SOMETHING – the whole errand in two words, on a keychain that leaves the house every day.

Then the fig. Celeste is the variety Louisiana home yards count on, ripe every July – we hung one on the branch, its leaf behind it, in the corner of a journal built for planting notes. The deep wine leather is the color of the ripe fruit itself.

For the catchall tray, satsuma time – the autumn fruit at the center with its leaves and one spring blossom, ringed by SATSUMA TIME above and LOUISIANA below, pressed generous into the golden tan leather.

Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.

And finally, the birdhouse gourd – a wren at the doorway and a little VACANCY sign swinging under the perch. We stamped it low in the corner of the toiletry bags, warm tan over chestnut.
