Read the Water – a stamped leather fly-fishing collection
A September study – Waterfall Volume I-C.
Read the Water is a small collection of original stamping dies drawn from the practice of fly fishing and pressed into full-grain leather, from luggage tags and journals to a catchall tray. Each design begins with something an angler actually does on the water.
First, the luggage tags. We drew moving water the way an angler reads it, current lines bending around a boulder, and set READ THE WATER in the quiet seam behind the rock – exactly where a trout would hold. The design runs lengthwise along the tag.
The black tag carries the words in gold.
It looks genuinely beautiful.
Next, the keychains. A fly line unrolls into one tight loop above the words ONE MORE CAST – the sentence every angler says at the hour they promised to leave. A keychain is what the hand finds at exactly that moment.
Then the journals, for hatch notes and remembered days. On the cover a caddis faces its own imitation beneath the words MATCH THE HATCH – the same tented silhouette twice over, and only one of them hides a hook. Deep wine and warm tan, stamped in the lower corner.
For the dopp kit, a Westslope cutthroat in profile, spotting gathered toward the tail and the slash mark under the jaw, above one word – NATIVE. We pressed it blind into the lower corner of both bags, navy over chestnut.
And finally, the catchall tray in golden tan, where a river day's pockets get emptied. At its center a trout dives back through the ring it broke in the surface, and STILL SWIMMING follows the rim – the way a good day ends.
Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.
