Second Growth – a leather study in salvaged Hudson Valley wood and hand-cut joinery
A September study – Shops Waterfall, Volume I-A.
Second Growth is a small leather collection about salvaged Hudson Valley wood and the traditional joinery that gives it a second life. Four stamps, nine pieces of leather.
First, the joint that holds without a single nail. We cut OLD and NEW into each other with hand-cut dovetails, and set JOINED FOR GOOD beneath – for good as in forever, and for good as in a good cause.
The three tags run light to dark the way boards wait in a rack – from warm caramel tan through honeyed russet to deep espresso brown. Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
Next, ODDS AND ENDS MADE EVEN – narrow offcut stripes, no two alike, squared into one clean block. We pressed it on the two pieces here that actually hold a person's odds and ends.
At full size on the golden tan tray it looks absolutely gorgeous.
Then we drew a stirring spoon still inside its plank, the grain running straight through it – ALREADY IN THE WOOD. The whole craft of salvage is finding it there.
And finally, STILL GOOD UNDERNEATH – a wooden plane caught mid-stroke, one broad curl rising, the board weathered ahead of it and clean behind. We pressed it on two journals, one the warm gray of a board left out in the rain, one deep navy. On a journal the phrase reads both ways.
