Small Sacred Things – a Calistoga leather collection

From the Practice Log – Waterfall Volume I-C, an independent stamping study.

A September study.

Small Sacred Things – a leather collection designed for Calistoga, where hot water has run under the town longer than the town has been there. Five small stamped-leather goods, luggage tag to catchall tray, each carrying its own mark.

First, we drew the geyser for the luggage tags – a column of hot water climbing out of the volcanic strata, with DEPARTS ON TIME underneath. It has kept that promise longer than any airline.

The black tag carries the geyser in gold foil.

Next, we gave the keychain a Victorian keyhole with an open eye at the aperture, and set FOR THE CURIOUS beneath it – a fob that knows what keys are for.

On the black fob the keyhole is pressed in gold, like light through a door.

On dark espresso, the color of the door, it goes blind.

Then we pressed a dried seed head onto the journals, herbarium style, with a specimen label that reads CALISTOGA and leaves the ruled lines empty – the label waits for what you find.

Looks quietly beautiful stamped into the corner, in deep green and in pale warm greige.

For the dopp kit we took the town's oldest prescription and stamped it whole: TAKE THE WATERS, steam rising off a ripple line – navy over dark espresso, water over volcanic earth.

And finally, the tray that names the collection. We built a Victorian arch with light falling through it and set SMALL SACRED THINGS inside, because that is what a tray by the door actually holds.

In golden tan, at generous size, it is our favorite of the five.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this collection is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
