Spindle & Spoon – a Greenville leather study, Volume III

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.

An August study. Volume III.

Greenville wove cloth before it poured wine, and downtown still does both inside a short walk. This August we pressed that double life into leather – a luggage tag here, a journal there, made for the people who carry this town with them.

First, we crossed a spindle with a spoon and ringed the pair with GREENVILLE – the mill craft and the table craft given equal rank on one small crest. It became the mark of the whole collection, and the keychains wear it first, in warm tan and deep green.

Next, the luggage tags. A spool lets out one long thread, and the thread finds its way down to a small house – THE THREAD LEADS HOME. That is a tag's whole job, said in cotton.

The trio runs deep green and deep wine. The black tag carries the gold.

Then the catchall tray, for the table by the door. We wove its border like mill cloth, warp over weft, and set the house rule in the middle – LAY IT ALL ON THE TABLE. Keys land there, and the day lands with them.

It looks genuinely beautiful on the golden tan.

For the road, we folded a clean shirt into the corner of the toiletry bags – CLEAN SHIRT, CLEAN START – a small promise to whoever unpacks it at tomorrow's sink. The stack is honeyed russet over deep brown.

And finally, the one we liked the most. A needle pulls its thread into the page's own ruled lines before trailing off, and under it we set the reason a journal exists – KEEP THE THREAD. For tasting notes, for the recipe that must survive the week.
