Spoken For – leather gifts with the sentence already on them

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.

A September study – Volume I-D.

Some sentences only get said while handing a gift over. We pressed four of them into leather, so each object keeps saying its line long after the wrapping is gone – a small collection called Spoken For.

First, the sentence every gift begins with. We wrote THIS MADE ME THINK OF YOU beneath a raised finger with a string bow tied on it – the oldest sign there is for remembering someone.

The same design rides in the lower corner of the toiletry bags, honeyed russet over deep espresso, so the line turns up every morning with the toothbrush.

Next, the luggage tags. We drew a dashed route that loops twice for the pleasure of it before arriving at a little front door, with TAKE THE LONG WAY HOME running underneath.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather – warm caramel tan first, then chestnut.

The black tag carries the design in gold.

Then the catchall tray, where a day actually ends – keys and coins set down at last. We sank a low sun into a shallow dish and arched THE DAY LANDS HERE above it, so the tray states its own job.

And finally, the journals. A tall opening quotation mark stands over IT HAPPENED LIKE THIS in the lower corner of the cover – the words a story gets told with, waiting for whoever keeps the family's version straight.
