The Daily Line – a leather collection for the drawing habit

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

A September study.

Volume I-B.

Painters in antiquity told a story about Apelles: he let no day pass without drawing at least one line, and the vow outlived him – nulla dies sine linea. We built a small leather collection around that vow, for the people who draw and for the people who love someone who does.

First, we gave the vow its picture – one continuous stroke that starts out trembling and finds its confidence, the way any practice does, with the old words beneath it. We pressed it into the corner of the journals where the daily lines will actually land, in true black and pale greige – charcoal and paper – and set it generously in the golden tan tray that gathers whatever a working table sheds.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

Next, GONE SKETCHING – the out-to-lunch sign of the drawing life. The pencil lies back like a rod and its line drifts off the way a good afternoon does. We ran it lengthwise along three luggage tags and pressed it small into the corner of the toiletry kits, a warm gray kit stacked on chestnut, for whoever packs the sketchbook before the toothbrush.

The black tag carries the gold; the pale greige and the pale sea-blue tags take a blind deboss.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

And finally, the one we liked the most. A fresh pencil holds about thirty-five miles of line, so a stub this short has already spent most of them somewhere. MILES OF LINE, STILL IN IT – a pocket medal for anyone who keeps showing up, in golden tan and deep wine.
