The Evening Route – a leather collection for Northport, New York

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies. Waterfall Volume II.

An August study.

For Northport, New York.

THE EVENING ROUTE is a small leather collection about the village's oldest good evening – the show on Main Street and the long walk down to the water. Luggage tags and keychains, a toiletry bag, a catchall tray and journals, each carrying one leg of the route.

First, Thursday. The community band has played the bandstand by the harbor on summer evenings since 1959, and the village still comes down with chairs and picnic blankets. We drew the bandstand sending one line of music out over the water, THURSDAY BY THE WATER beneath it, and ran the design the long way down the luggage tags.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

Next, the keychains. In 1913 the trolley added an evening run so the audience could get home after the movies, so we put the little car under a crescent moon and arched LAST CAR HOME over it. A keychain does the same work – it gets you home.

Then, a ticket for the toiletry bag. The Main Street theater opened in 1912, back when the films were silent, and we pressed a small ADMIT ONE stub into the bag's corner – an overnight bag admits exactly one.

The catchall tray, in golden tan, took the rowboat – tied off with slack in the line under the moon, IN FOR THE NIGHT arched above. Keys and ticket stubs moor there until morning.

And finally, the one we liked the most. The silent films on Main Street were never quite silent – a pianist played every one of them live. So the journals carry an upright piano with the film unspooling across its music desk, over the words LIVE ACCOMPANIMENT. A day is silent footage too, until somebody sits down and plays along.
