The Open Table – a leather stamping collection of cup rings and chess moves

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.

A September study – Waterfall Volume I-C.

This one is a study of staying – the second cup, the chair pulled out for whoever comes next. We call the collection The Open Table.

First, we drew the mark a good table earns – a coffee ring that printed twice, with STAY A WHILE lettered inside it.

On the golden tan tray, the ring sits exactly where a cup would have left it.

Next, we cut a knight in woodblock black and set YOUR MOVE beneath it – for the keys you pick up every morning.

Then we pulled a chair back from the table and lettered COME AS YOU ARE under it. It went on the toiletry bags, in warm tan over chestnut – the kit that meets you before you have decided who to be today.

And finally, a pawn at the top of its file – six squares climbed one at a time, THE LONG GAME beneath. A journal is where that kind of walking gets written down.
