From the Practice Log -- an ongoing series of leather stamping studies. Volume I-A.

An August study.

We made a small leather collection for Fayetteville, Arkansas -- The Ozark Reader -- and stamped it across luggage tags, a toiletry bag, keychains, a catchall tray and journals, one design for each.

First, the luggage tags. We opened a book at the foot of the die and let the pages get away from it -- the topmost sheets have already turned into birds. CARRIED AWAY is what a good story does to a reader, and what luggage counts on.

Next, the toiletry bag. We dropped a ribbon bookmark straight through TO BE CONTINUED -- a bag packed for the night makes the same promise a bookmark does, that the story picks up somewhere else. Stamped small in the corner, warm tan over chestnut.

Then the keychains. We set MEET ME ON THE SQUARE inside a square rule -- the appointment Fayetteville makes without thinking, pressed onto the thing that gets you home.

Then the catchall tray. We stamped END OF CHAPTER over a swelled rule and a single printer's leaf, the mark a book makes where a section closes. Keys and watch land here when the day's does.

And finally, the one we liked the most. We drew the Boston Mountains out of the rules of a lined page, so the hills themselves read as writing -- EVERY HOLLOW HOLDS A STORY. A journal is for the hollows still waiting on theirs, here in deep green and in honeyed russet.

It looks genuinely beautiful.
