The Slow Tide – a leather stamping study of waves and beachcombed findings

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.

A September study – Volume I-C, The Slow Tide.

A small collection about the sea's unhurried habits. The waves arrive one at a time, and whoever looks down at the sand gets to keep what the tide left.

First, we took the pace the ocean keeps and pressed it into the traveling pieces. One breaking wave, and beneath it ONE WAVE AT A TIME – the whole ocean comes ashore that way.

The keychains take the same wave at pocket scale – pale sea-blue and a warm poppy red.

On the toiletry bags the wave sits small in the lower corner – navy over chestnut.

Next, the catchall tray. Keys ride around all day and deserve somewhere to come to rest, so we built them one – a mooring bollard with its line made fast inside a ring of rope, under the words SAFE HARBOR.

It looks genuinely beautiful in golden tan.

And finally, the journals. A morning at the water's edge leaves evidence – shell and sea glass, whelk and feather – so we plated the findings like a naturalist's specimens above the words WHAT THE TIDE LEFT. A journal is where the day's findings get written down before they wash back out.
