The Understory – leather studies of Gainesville, Georgia
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of original leather stamping studies.
A September study. Volume I-B.
The Understory is a small leather collection rooted in Gainesville, Georgia – the woodland garden side of town, where half-mile trails run under sourwoods and native hollies. Luggage tags and journals lead it, with a few companions behind.
First, we set a dogwood bloom floating over the ridgelines, the way the Dogwood Trail climbs for its forest views – GAINESVILLE arched above, GEORGIA beneath.
It rides the luggage tags in pale rose and in deep green.
The black tag carries the gold.
Next, we planted a signpost. Sourwood and Dogwood point one way, Holly Ridge the other – the walking trails written the way a junction would sign them.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
And it waits in the corner of the toiletry bags – honeyed russet over chestnut, the foothills in October.
Then we turned the catchall tray into the forest pond. One lotus opens at the center and the ripples widen to the rim, so whatever you set down settles like a leaf on still water.
And finally, the design the collection is named for. We layered a canopy across the top and wrote THE UNDERSTORY beneath it, where an understory belongs – a journal is the shaded layer of a garden too, the place the notes grow.
It looks genuinely beautiful.
