CEDAR WATER – a South Jersey Pine Barrens leather collection
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of original leather stamping studies.
A September study. Volume I-A.
CEDAR WATER is a small leather collection rooted in the Pine Barrens east of Voorhees, where the streams run the color of steeped tea under the cedars. Four original designs, stamped across luggage tags and journals, keychains and a catchall tray.
First, the namesake. The pinelands pour their rivers tea-dark, so we drew them a teacup – the stream winds out of the cup and away between the cedars, with CEDAR WATER set underneath.
It runs lengthwise along the luggage tags, in deep pine green and tea-dark brown, with a third tag in pale sand.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
The same cup pours small in the corner of the toiletry kits, warm tan stacked over deep brown.
Next, the pink lady's slipper, the orchid that keeps to the pinewoods. We drew its inflated pouch and hanging petals from a reference photograph, set LADY SLIPPER beneath, and placed it in the lower corner of the journals – one pale rose, one deep green.
Then the pitch pine, crooked and unbothered, standing on its little mound of sand above THE PINELANDS. We pressed it on the keychain fobs in golden tan and deep green.
Keychains with the little crooked pine look just awesome.
And finally, the cranberry bogs from above – cells and channels cut straight into the golden tan tray, one bog flooded and dotted with berries, because that is how the harvest comes in: THE HARVEST FLOATS.
It looks genuinely beautiful.
