The Easternmost Collection – a Lubec, Maine leather stamping study

A September study.
Volume I-D: the Easternmost Collection – Lubec, Maine, pressed into leather.
First, we set one proud word over West Quoddy Head and let the sun come up behind the tower. EASTERNMOST is simply true here – the striped light stands at the easternmost point of the contiguous United States.
It looks genuinely beautiful.
The black luggage tag carries the sunrise in gold; the deep navy and pale sea-blue tags take a blind deboss.
Lubec is a border town with a bridge to another country at the end of it, so the same die crosses onto passport covers – one deep navy, one pale greige, the color of the sky a minute before sunrise.
Next, the keychains. Lubec keeps a second light out in the channel, a stout little caisson tower that locals call the SparkPlug, and we wrote the name straight onto the fob. On the black fob the pass runs gold, and for once the SparkPlug is lit.
Then we walked the waterfront back a hundred years. Herring were once threaded onto wooden sticks and hung in the smoke along this same shore, so we hung six of them on one stick and set SMOKEHOUSE underneath. Pressed into the lower corner of the journals – one chestnut, one pale greige – it reads like an old packer's mark.
The same stamp sits at the center of the golden tan catchall tray.
And finally, the bridge. From Lubec the next country over is one span away, so the toiletry bag carries the crossing, ACROSS THE NARROWS beneath the silhouette – navy over deep espresso brown, packed for either side of the water.
