Easternmost – a Lubec leather collection · Volume I-C

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies, this time a collection of original designs.

A September study. Volume I-C.

Easternmost is a small leather collection made for Lubec, Maine – the town that stands farther east than any other in the contiguous United States. Everything below was designed to go home in a visitor's pocket.

First, we drew a compass rose and let the east ray have its way – it breaks the ring and runs on until it touches the rising sun, because from here that direction is settled.

The black tag carries the design in gold – first light on dark water.

The same mark presses at full size into the catchall tray, and rides the corner of the toiletry kits – navy over dark espresso, shingle blue over old pilings.

Next, the light at West Quoddy Head, which has worn its stripes since 1858. The bands press as pure black and white, which is what a candy-striped tower has always wanted to be.

On poppy red the keychain borrows the tower's own paint; on navy it stands against the sea. Keychains with the striped light look just awesome.

Then, the passport covers. We wrote NEXT DOOR IS ANOTHER COUNTRY over the bridge across the Narrows, which lands on Campobello Island, New Brunswick – a passport here earns its keep two minutes from downtown.

And finally, the one we liked the most. The Narrows lose more than twenty feet of water twice a day, and twice a day every foot of it returns. We stood a rank of old pilings under the words THE TIDE COMES BACK, each post wearing its white high water ring – the most reliable encouragement we know, and a fair thing to press on a journal.

On pale sea-blue the water is in; on pale greige the flats are out.
