Three leather luggage-tag studies for the Academy

An aperture built for a reveal
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences lives through motion pictures, yet much of its public life is organized around carefully staged moments: a name announced, a room opened, a table prepared, an audience gathered. Awards season includes the Governors Awards, the nominees luncheon, the Scientific and Technical Awards, and the Governors Ball. Each occasion depends on production work whose success is felt long before anyone thinks to ask how it happened.
The Academy’s current symbol compresses that sense of reveal into a pointed gold aperture. Its steep sides form an abstract A, while the middle behaves like a portal of light. The Oscar statuette occupies the official counterform. These three studies leave the statuette and complete Academy mark entirely outside the leather. Each begins with a smaller, verified ingredient: the pitch of the two side planes, the illuminated central opening, or the brand system’s treatment of gold as light.
Luggage tags suit this world because the Academy is also a traveling community. Members cross cities and borders for productions, festivals, meetings, and ceremonies. Event teams and partners move with them. A well-made tag can serve those journeys without turning the bag into a billboard, which set the scale for every decision here.
Leather and treatment
Blueberry and Caramel carry a blind deboss, so the drawing appears through pressure and shadow. Black receives the same die in restrained warm gold. The palette picks up the Academy’s black-and-gold formality, while the warm hides keep the object personal. Every family uses one identical die on all three tags.
The three concepts
1. The Opened Envelope
An envelope is the ordinary machinery of an announcement. The drawing shows one from the back with its flap lifted high, ready for the moment when private knowledge becomes public. Its unusually steep flap borrows the pitch of the Academy aperture’s two outer planes. The shape is recognizable before the reference arrives, which matters on a gift meant to be used beyond one event.
The Academy connection sits in the angle and in the action. Nominations, invitations, seating, credentials, and congratulations all pass through an opening of this kind, even when the real message arrives digitally. The object keeps the emotional truth of the envelope: something has been prepared for one person, and the reveal waits for a hand.
2. Door Ajar
A door stands partly open and spills a clean wedge of light across the floor. Most viewers will read arrival. For an Academy insider, the white wedge recalls the broad central opening in the official aperture, translated into architecture and hospitality. The complete symbol disappears; its spatial logic remains.
The scene belongs equally to a theater, a ballroom, or the quiet corridor behind a live event. It acknowledges the precise instant when months of production turn into welcome. We considered a more literal cinema image and stepped back. A door gives the idea more room and makes the tag appropriate for a member, a partner, or the crew that opened the room in the first place.
3. The Lit Candle
A single candle glows inside a dark circular field. Its first reading is dinner-table warmth. The Academy reading comes through the brand guide’s use of gold as illumination and through the hospitality of gatherings such as the nominees luncheon and Governors Ball. On Black leather, gold foil supplies the light directly. On Caramel and Blueberry, the same glow is built from relief.
The candle also brings human scale to an organization associated with a global broadcast. Every large ceremony is made from smaller acts of attention: a place set, a guest received, a room made warm. That was the useful tension in this study. The drawing needed enough formality for an awards institution and enough familiarity to live happily on someone’s luggage after the evening ends.
Any of the three could serve event teams, members, partners, or guests for a holiday, a milestone, or another gathering. The designs remain independent studies, and every image below is a render made before any metal die is cut.
