BELAY × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

An August study.

For BELAY.

The double loop is already a rope story, so we press the mark as found – lengthwise along the tag, knot leading the letters. Forest green answers the knot, gray sand the white of the wordmark. A third tag runs in black, and the black one carries the gold.

Before anyone climbs, two words go down the rope and two come back – ON BELAY, then the answer, BELAY ON. On the die the exchange sits around a figure-eight follow-through, one rope connecting call to reply; it is the knot a climber checks twice, which is roughly the service BELAY sells.

The exchange rides the things that leave the house: keychains in forest green and black. The black fob carries the gold.

And it holds the corner of a dopp kit, blueberry over dark espresso – the deep blue-green of their own dark ground, in leather.

OFF BELAY is the call for when you are anchored and the rope can come off – the day's climbing done. So the tray gets a neatly coiled rope in golden tan arizona, waiting where keys and change land in the evening.

CLIMB ON is the reply that starts the ascent. On the journal the rope underlines the command and turns upward past the last letter, tied off in a stopper knot – the next pitch gets planned on paper first. Forest green and gray sand.
