Chaise Sanders × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies inspired by real-world people and identities.

An August study.

For Chaise Sanders.

Three years is the leather anniversary, and Chaise Sanders co-wrote the definitive guide to it – thirty leather gifts chosen for everyone except the writer. We took that as our opening. First, luggage tags: a rooftop water tower on its steel stilts, RETURN TO NEW YORK around it – a luggage tag's one job, said the way the city says it.

The black tag carries the stamp in gold foil. Caramel and fuchsia take it as a blind press, the pink borrowed straight from the world her pages live in.

Next, the words her own bio uses – a life spent roaming the city for hidden gems. We cut a faceted gem for the keychain fobs, HIDDEN GEM beneath it, since that is what a keychain does anyway: it disappears into a bag and waits to be found. One in pale sea-blue, one in pale rose.

Then the dek's promise, "a gift that only gets better with time", pressed where it can prove itself: an hourglass with the sand nearly through, BETTER WITH TIME arched over it, in the corner of a caramel and dark espresso stack that will spend years making the claim true.

A catchall lives by the door, where every homecoming has its first witness. We curled a sleeping dog into the base of the golden tan tray, EVERYONE'S HOME arched above, a single key closing the ring – keys in the tray means the day is done.

And finally, the instruction the roundup opens with, returned to its author. A journal is where overthinking goes to win, so the cover gets a pencil already mid-stroke, the line begun before doubt could catch up, DON'T OVERTHINK IT beneath. One in black, one in dusty rose. It is the one we like most.
