Філософський факультет ЛНУ імені Івана Франка × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

An August study.

For Філософський факультет ЛНУ імені Івана Франка.

For the warm-up, we redrew the faculty crest in high resolution and pressed it on the luggage tags – the crowned lion keeps his crown and both ribbons still read exactly as they should, down to NOSCE TE IPSUM. The black tag carries it in gold.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

Next, the motto from the bottom ribbon, spoken in Ukrainian. ПІЗНАЙ СЕБЕ circles a small round mirror, and the mirror stays empty – blank leather, since knowing yourself is the one part a stamp must leave to you. We put it on the toiletry kits, the bag you carry to an actual mirror every morning.

The same die went onto a keychain duo that borrows the shield's own two fields – magenta and pale sea-blue.

Then a fob for the keys themselves: a question mark whose dot is cut as a keyhole. It hangs on the ring as the one key that opens everything else. The black fob takes it in gold.

The crowned lion then stepped down from his blue field and set his forepaws on an open book, with ФІЛОСОФІЯ beneath. Keychains with the little lion look just awesome.

The journals took three dies of their own. The first belongs to Socrates, seated the way he sits on the faculty's homepage, above the most honest line ever offered to a blank book – Я ЗНАЮ ЩО НІЧОГО НЕ ЗНАЮ. Every empty page inside proves him right.

The second is a dialogue – two profiles face one another, and the white space between them turns out to be a question mark. ДІАЛОГ ІЗ СОБОЮ, a dialogue with yourself, which is what a journal is for.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

The third takes the faculty's strategy at its word about the change the city is owed: a pen nib whose ink line rises until it becomes the Lviv skyline. ДУМКА СТАЄ ДІЄЮ – thought becomes action.

And finally, the catchall tray in golden tan – four paths, one for each discipline taught under this roof, meeting in one open centre. Everything in your pockets ends the day in the same place; so do the four of them.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
