Five9 × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

An August study.

Five9 has been helping people reach other people since 2001, back when moving a contact center into the cloud sounded like a dare. The company sells software, and the software exists for one moment: a call goes through, and somebody who needed help finds a human on the other end. We also like the way they talk about the companies they work alongside – partners, Five9 says, are part of the team.

That sentence stayed with us, so we spent a while at the bench with their mark and their world. Here is what came of it.

The mark, as found

The wordmark is a heavy, rounded thing set in a blue with real voltage in it, and the numeral does the flourish: the 9 is a bold circle with a tail that swings down like a handset cord. A mark this wide wants the long axis of a tag, so that is where we sent it.

Pressed

We pressed the wordmark, exactly as found, along lengthwise luggage tags in navy blueberry and pale gray sand – the deep and the light of Five9's own blue-on-white world. The black tag takes the gold.

Five lines, nine points

Nobody at Five9 ever told us what the name means, and we did not ask. We counted instead, and the count became a drawing of what the company does all day: five voices enter on the left and nine points route them, until one connection comes out the other side, larger than it went in. The switchboard is our own invention, offered with affection rather than as company lore.

It sits centered in the golden tan of an arizona catchall tray, the square snap-corner kind that lives by the door and collects the day from a traveler's pockets.

And it lands in the lower corner of a pair of wrap journals, one in pale gray sand and one in navy blueberry, for the notebooks that enablement sessions and partner planning actually fill.

The partner knot

For the people Five9 calls part of the team, we drew a seal: two ropes entering from opposite sides, tied in a square knot, ringed by the words themselves. A square knot holds because each rope grips the other – neither holds anything alone. That seemed to us the honest emblem for a partner program.

On keychains it rides in two registers of Five9 blue, navy blueberry beside a pale sea-blue fob.

And it signs the corner of a toiletry-bag stack, navy blueberry over deep espresso, the quiet maker's-mark way – a blind press with no foil, for the partner who flies out to the events where this work really happens.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
