IGT × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.
An August study.
IGT makes the games people actually play – the machines on the casino floor and the systems that keep them honest. The company states its purpose as "Delivering entertaining and responsible gaming experiences for players everywhere," and we like that responsible sits right beside entertaining; in a regulated industry, that pairing is the whole job. Around 7,200 people worldwide do that work, most of them far from the lights their machines produce. This study is for the mark they work under.
The mark, as found
A disc of casino light, yellow warming into orange and cooling into deep blue, split clean through by a white burst; beside it, three stout blue capitals. You could pick it out across a crowded floor, which is roughly the job description of a gaming mark.
Pressed
We matched the leathers to the emblem. Deep navy blueberry answers the blue of the letters, and golden-tan arizona carries the warm top of the disc. The wide lockup runs the long way along each tag, and the black tag takes it in gold foil, which is as close as leather comes to a payout.
Three bursts on the payline
The companion design borrows the oldest picture in the building: a reel window, three panes, one thin payline. In place of cherries or sevens, the reels have stopped on IGT's own burst, three of a kind, lined up. A small banner underneath reads FOR PLAYERS EVERYWHERE, taken straight from the purpose the company states for its work.
Pressed at generous size into the base of a golden-tan arizona catchall tray, the window becomes the place where the day's winnings land – keys and pocket change, mostly. Whether that counts as a payout depends on the day; the tray holds it either way.
The same window rides a pair of keychain fobs. On deep navy blueberry it sits as a blind deboss, pressed tone on tone; on the black fob the reels come up gold.
Behind every win
Somewhere behind every winning spin stands a person who kept the machine running. The second design is for them: a small roundel with the burst overhead and the words BEHIND EVERY WIN stacked beneath a thin rule. We sized it as a maker's mark, the quiet corner stamp you find on an object years after someone gave it to you.
On a two-bag toiletry stack, deep navy blueberry over dark espresso, the roundel sits low in the corner of each bag, right where a traveling engineer's thumb finds it.
And on a pair of wrap journals, deep navy blueberry beside golden-tan arizona, it lands in the lower corner of the front panel – where a hand naturally rests when the notebook is closed and the shift is over.
