IU School of Medicine General Surgery Residency × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

An August study.

For the IU School of Medicine General Surgery Residency.

For the warm-up, we put the IU trident on the luggage tags – a deep wine tag for the crimson, a pale greige one for the cream. The black tag takes the trident in gold foil.

Next, the toiletry bags. Every day in surgery starts at the sink, so the bag that holds the morning kit takes the order – SCRUB IN, with FIRST THINGS FIRST in small capitals beneath.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

Then the keychains. The program trains its residents toward autonomy in the operating room, and a set of keys is what autonomy looks like in the hand. So the fob says AUTONOMY, and under it, EARNED IN THE OR – on deep wine and pale greige, the crimson and cream again.

Then the catchall tray, where the day's pockets get emptied. It announces what every good case ends with – ALL COUNTS CORRECT, ringed by tally marks and pressed into golden tan.

And finally, the one we liked the most. Surgeons pass the craft down by the old rule – SEE ONE DO ONE TEACH ONE. This program then sends its residents off to research and publish, so the journal cover adds a fourth line, heavier than the rest – WRITE ONE. A deep wine journal and a black one, both pressed blind.
