Lori Zaino × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies in leather.

An August study.

For Lori Zaino.

First, the commute. Chicago-born, Madrid-based for nearly two decades – so we drew the great circle between MAD and ORD, with a small plane at the top of the arc and the Atlantic rolling underneath. Madrid flies in red and Chicago in the pale sea-blue of its flag. The navy tag is the night crossing in between.

Next, the one job a luggage tag was ever asked to do. Seven identical suitcases ride the carousel and one is filled in solid – THIS ONE IS MINE. For someone who once weighed twenty-seven luggage tags against each other, we wanted the twenty-eighth to end the argument. The trio wears the colors old suitcases actually came in.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

Then, the doctrine from her own packing playbook: a week of travel out of a single carry-on. We cut the case open and tiled it with packing cubes edge to edge; one cube shows a neat spiral of rolled clothes. ONE BAG above, ONE WEEK below, on warm gray and caramel – the calm of a system that works.

After that, her resolution about points, taken literally. Coins pour through the neck of an hourglass and come out the other side as a small plane already climbing – stored value turning into travel while there is still time. SPEND THE POINTS above, SEE THE WORLD below, on golden tan and pale sea-blue: the coin and the lagoon.

And finally, the phrase that runs through her whole biography: luxe on a budget. We gave a backpack a crown. The honeyed russet tag is the backpack half of the story. The black tag carries the crown in gold foil – that half is staying at the Ritz.

Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
