OUTWARDEN × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

A September study.

For OUTWARDEN.

First, we drew the patrol itself – one unbroken loop with a single dot riding the line, the rover mid-round. OUTWARDEN sits inside. In print it runs deep night navy with a patrol-amber dot.

It presses beautifully into the navy journal.

Next, the oldest word for the job. We built a squat watchtower with a crenellated crown and set the name beneath it in slab capitals. In color the tower is granite, with its one narrow window lit gold.

On the pale warm greige journal it reads like carved stone.

Then we lit the watchman's lantern, the flame cut out in white and short strokes of light scratched outward. Lamp amber over wick charcoal for print.

The night shift deserved a face, so we gave it an owl – two wide eyes and ear tufts, nothing else. Midnight blue and moon cream.

We hung an eight point star over a bare horizon – the fixed point a night patrol steers by. Polar ink with a touch of star gold, and the true black journal to match.

A shield with a keyhole cut clean through it – the ward and its warden in one shape. Deep pine and old brass, pressed into deep green leather.

Then the type route. OUTWARDEN in extended capitals inside a ruled frame; the bottom rule breaks once, and a single dot stands in the gap. Ink, with the high-vis chartreuse we lifted from safety wear.

On the rover, this one works the hardest.

For the gentlest route we sent a miniature rover along the horizon under a crescent moon. Deep night with a dusk violet moon in print, a dusty lavender journal in the hand.

A sitting dog next, ears pricked, tail wrapped over its front paws – awake and unbothered. Russet over coal, stamped into chestnut leather with visible character.

Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the warm red leather.

And on the machine, the red reads from across a lot.

And finally, the keeper's key – an antique warded key laid flat above the name, ring bow to the left and two square teeth to the right. Old brass on espresso, pressed into a honeyed russet journal.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
