Smurfit Westrock × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

An August study.

For Smurfit Westrock, care of Melissa Grilliot-Hill.

The mark, pressed as found on three leathers off their own palette: navy for the deep blue of the wordmark, pale sea-blue for the cyan of the symbol. The third tag wears a caramel tan very close to kraft board, which struck us as the only honest neutral for a paper company.

Anyone in this business can read the plate above at a glance: a die-line, cut lines solid and fold lines dashed, with the finished box sitting in the middle of its own flat future. We pressed it into the golden tan of a valet tray that plays the same trick as their board – a flat square, folded up at the corners into something that holds.

Four folded sheets chase each other around an open center – a company that runs some thirteen million tons of recovered fiber back through its mills each year has earned a mark where the paper keeps moving. Two fobs, navy and pale sea-blue, the two colors of their mark split across the pair.

"Create, protect and care," in their exact words, pressed small into the lower corner of a navy and chestnut stack, right where a maker signs. A wash bag is modest packaging for a person; protecting and caring are simply what it does all day.

Of everything here, the journal is the one object that ships with their product inside – a few hundred blank sheets, waiting to become worth protecting. Under a small stack of lifting pages the cover reads WHAT WE'RE MADE OF MATTERS, once in the deep green of their sustainability pages and once in kraft-tan caramel.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
