Smurfit Westrock × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.

An August study.

For Smurfit Westrock.

For the warm-up, we put the Smurfit Westrock logo on the luggage tags, lengthwise, the way it reads. Two of the leathers match their inks – deep navy and pale sea-blue – and a pale greige tag stands in for the white their pages breathe.

Next, we borrowed the language stenciled on every box they make. The toiletry bags carry HANDLE WITH CARE under the goblet that means fragile – a line that reads one way on a crate and another way on a gift.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

Then we stenciled THIS SIDE UP across the catchall tray – the one object that will keep the instruction for the rest of its life.

In cross-section, corrugated board is two flat liners with a wave between them, and the wave carries the load. We drew the wave and ringed it with the company name; the keychains wear it in navy and pale sea-blue.

And finally, the one we liked the most. A carton blank laid flat, score lines and all, under their own line – "What We're Made of Matters". A journal is their material bound in ours; one wears the warm tan of kraft board, the other their navy.

It looks genuinely beautiful.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
