TeamHealth × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.
An August study.
TeamHealth is physician-founded and clinician-led, a team of teams supporting clinicians across the country, in practices large and small, academic and community. What made us want to press their mark is how they talk about all that scale. The mission is to “deliver exceptional care during life’s pivotal moments,” and, in their own words, “Behind every moment of exceptional care is a person with a purpose.” A national workforce, described one person at a time. That sentence set the course for everything below.
The mark, as found
A wide lockup: TEAM in heavy blue capitals, Health joined directly to it in a lighter face, the registered mark tucked at the lower right. It is horizontal by nature, which decided the tags’ orientation before we did.
Pressed
The lockup runs lengthwise, the full wordmark pressed letter for letter along the tag’s long axis. We drew the leathers straight from the mark: blueberry, a deep navy, for the blue of TEAM, and gray sand, a pale greige, for the white field the brand lives on. The black tag carries the gold – our one foil pass, and the formal pole of the trio.
A constellation, held
TeamHealth describes its work through contrasts – large and small, urban and rural – and always through people. So the first companion design is a night sky. Stars of different sizes scatter across a round seal, each joined to a neighbor by a fine line, the whole web gathering toward one brighter star near the center. Around the rim run two of their own words: EXCEPTIONAL CARE above, TOGETHER below. We first tried lines that converged on the center like spokes, and the result read as an org chart. A constellation is better. Every star holds its own place, and the figure still needs all of them.
Centered on the golden tan arizona catchall tray, the seal sits at the bottom of the small dish where keys and a badge land at the end of a shift. The press is blind, tone on tone; arizona often photographs a shade brighter than life.
On the wrap journals it presses generously into the lower right corner, in deep navy blueberry and in true black – the two inks of the wordmark, translated into leather. On black the unfoiled press reads as a quiet shadow relief, well suited to a book meant to be carried and written in.
The way here
The second design is for arrivals. Everyone who joins a team has crossed some distance to get there – a search and a decision, often a move as well. So we drew an eight pointed north star whose lowest ray refuses to end: it lengthens into a winding road that widens toward the viewer, guidance and journey in one unbroken stroke. A small mark, made for the corners of things.
The toiletry bags stack deep navy blueberry over dark espresso, a deep brown standing in for the wordmark’s near black. The star sits small in the lower right corner of each bag, blind debossed; gold never touches these bags, and travel would scuff it anyway.
The keychain fobs take the same star in deep navy blueberry and in pale greige gray sand – the mark’s blue and its white field. A key is the most literal object in the study: the first thing a new colleague is handed, and the thing they pocket every evening on the way home.
We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
