UCLA Financial Aid & Scholarships × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world logos.
An August study.
For UCLA Financial Aid & Scholarships.
For the warm-up, we put the official lockup on the luggage tags, lengthwise, in navy and golden tan for the school colors. A black tag joins the pair and carries the lockup in gold foil.
Next, we borrowed the office's own instrument. When an application goes well, it ends under an approval stamp – so we cut ACCESS GRANTED as a die, double-framed, set at the slight angle of a hand that has pressed it ten thousand times. It went on the journals, in navy and warm tan, and into the corner of the toiletry kits, navy stacked over chestnut.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
Then, the motto. The homepage opens with "Let's Make UCLA Happen", and we set its heart over a rising sun, with a road running straight into the light. It went onto the golden catchall tray – the dish where keys land at the end of a working day.
It looks genuinely beautiful.
And finally, the one we liked the most. A key whose teeth are cut to spell UCLA, because cutting the key that opens the university is the whole job. We stamped it on the keychain fobs, where it gets to live among the keys it stands for. The navy fob takes it blind; the black one takes it in gold.
We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
