University of Minnesota School of Social Work × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies on real-world marks.

An August study.

For the University of Minnesota School of Social Work.

The official wordmark is a wide thing, so the tags carry it the way it wants to travel – lengthwise, the full lockup running along the long side. One tag in deep wine for the maroon, one in golden tan for the gold. The black tag carries the wordmark in gold foil.

Social work keeps one diagram above all the others – the person inside concentric systems. We gave each ring a doorway and let the doorways fall out of line, because they always do. The line walks in anyway, door by door, until it reaches the person at the center. We call the mark the way in.

On the keychains it rides in deep wine and in black. The black fob carries it in gold.

On the toiletry bags it sits small in the lower right corner, golden tan over deep espresso – a maker's mark for the kind of week that includes a conference.

And generous at the center of the golden tan tray, where keys and badges land at the end of the day – inside the rings, for once.

A field note is one dot. Enough of them, joined in the right order, point somewhere – so the journal covers carry the Big Dipper, its outer edge running straight to the North Star that Minnesota wrote into its motto. Pressed generous in the lower right, on deep wine and warm caramel.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
