Uphill to the Park – a Park Slope, Brooklyn leather collection
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.
An August study.
Park Slope, Brooklyn, is named for a fact you feel in your calves: from Fifth Avenue the blocks climb steadily until they end at Prospect Park. We spent August pressing that walk into a small line of leather goods, luggage tags and journals among them.
First, the name taken literally. A terrace of brownstones steps uphill, cornice by cornice, until the block hands the skyline to one great park tree – and UPHILL TO THE PARK walks along beneath.
We ran it lengthwise along the luggage tags. The trio wears navy and deep park green, with a warm sandstone tan closing the set. It looks genuinely beautiful.
The same climb sits at the center of the golden tan catchall tray, where keys and pocket change land at the top of the hill.
Next, the judging. We pinned a first prize rosette on the chest of a city pigeon and arched BEST IN SHOW overhead – some winners are simply obvious.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather. The keychains come as a pair, warm red and navy.
On the toiletry bags, navy over chestnut, the champion keeps politely to the lower corner.
And finally, the one we liked the most. A brownstone stoop with its iron rail, and on the third step a box of books marked FREE – the oldest gift economy on the block.
It sits in the corner of the journals, one in stoop-stone gray and one in pale sea-blue. Whatever gets written inside was found on the way home.
