Vivian Marino × Leatherius Woodman – a leather stamping study

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of stamping studies in leather.

An August study.

For Vivian Marino.

First, the luggage tags. In property law, a house is real property and anything you can carry is personal property – so we drew a house you can carry, with a suitcase handle rising straight off the roof ridge, and set PERSONAL PROPERTY beneath it.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather. Two tags run warm tan and warm red, pressed blind. The black tag carries the design in gold foil.

Next, the keychains. We set BIG TICKET as an actual ticket, scalloped punch ends and all, with ADMIT ONE underneath – which is exactly what a key does.

One fob is golden tan. The black fob carries the gold.

Then, the toiletry bags. A newsroom overnighter is written after dark so it can make the morning edition. A suitcase knows the other kind. We pressed a crescent moon over a small valise into the corner of the stack – a black bag over a deep brown one, blind – with THE OVERNIGHTER beneath.

After that, the catchall tray – the one we liked the most. We drew a floor plan into the golden tan base: a small flat where KEYS takes the foyer and PHONE gets the parlor, under a title block reading A HOME FOR EVERYTHING. Whatever lands in the tray at night has an address by morning.

Next, the journals. STET is the proofreader's mercy – dots under the word, let it stand. On the front of a blank book it reads as a promise to the first draft.

Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather – one journal in deep wine, one in pale greige.

And finally, the passport covers. We set PRESS between two stars inside a double rule, like a card tucked into a hatband, and pressed it at the size a monogram would take – one cover in navy, one in deep green.

We made this out of love. Leatherius Woodman is on a mission to create and share artifacts of beauty, craft and love – this study is one of them, and we hope the feeling is mutual. Every image is a render – how we prototype before cutting a die.
