Framingham Fields – a leather stamping collection for Framingham, Massachusetts

From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies.

An August study.

Framingham Fields – five original stamps drawn from the farm roads and the town Common of Framingham, Massachusetts, and pressed into leather.

First, we drew the long way home. A farm road bends through open pasture toward a barn and a pair of silos, and HOME stands in the sky where the road ends. We ran the design the length of the luggage tags – the trio runs from navy to hay gold.

Next, the pair of silos that hold up the skyline north of town, with FRAMINGHAM set beneath them in small capitals. The mark sits in the corner of the toiletry bags, warm gray stacked over chestnut – silo concrete over barn wood.

Then, a horseshoe with its heels up, so the luck stays in, and FOUND across the arch. On a keychain the word does honest work – these are the keys that come back. Pressed into warm red and caramel.

Looks great when stamped onto the leather.

A day's pockets end in the catchall tray, so the tray says GATHER, set inside a wreath of hay and meadow flowers and pressed at a generous size into the golden tan.

And finally, the one we liked the most. A journal is a commonplace book, and Framingham keeps a Common – so the cover carries COMMON PLACE inside a thin fenced border, with the Common's old buildings standing small along the top rule. In deep green and pale greige.

It looks genuinely beautiful.
