The Glass Town Collection – a leather study for Sandwich, Massachusetts
An August study.
Sandwich has been pressing beauty into hard material since 1825, when the glass works fired up. We pressed ours into leather – five stamps for the oldest town on Cape Cod, gathered under one name: the Glass Town collection.
First, the boardwalk. We drew it plank by plank, running out across the marsh, and wrote THE LONG WAY TO THE BAY into the sky above it – a luggage tag ought to side with the scenic route. The three leathers follow the walk – deep marsh green at the start, deep bay navy at the end. Between them, a pale dune greige.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
Next, the keychains. Sandwich pressed lace into glass; we pressed a cup plate into leather – a sixteen-point hobstar at the heart, GLASS TOWN and 1825 on the band. One fob comes in pale sea-blue, the color of beach glass, the other in deep cranberry wine, our nod to the bogs.
Then the wash bags. MORNING TIDE – a sun coming up over three lines of creek water, stamped small in the corner, because a dopp kit is the first thing a morning reaches for. The stack pairs deep navy over chestnut.
The catchall tray carries the laciest die of the set – a full pressed-glass rosette ringed with PRESSED IN SANDWICH and 1825. A pressed dish once held this town's small things; a golden tan tray now takes the shift. It looks genuinely beautiful.
And finally, the journals. An old saltbox roofline over NEW STORIES SINCE 1639 – this town has had the longest run of stories on the Cape, and a journal is where the next one starts. One cover in deep espresso, one in honeyed russet.
