Volume I-A of the Grand River Almanac – a leather stamping collection.
A September study.
Painesville sits on the Grand River, two and a half miles up from Lake Erie. In late summer the meadows along the river fill with asters and ironweed, and the monarchs drift through on their way south. We pressed that landscape into leather.
First, the monarchs. Every September they pass through the river meadows, resting on New England aster before the long leg south – so we set one on an aster spray and wrote PASSING THROUGH beneath it, for the luggage tags.
The black tag carries the stamp in gold; forest green and lilac take it blind.
It looks genuinely beautiful.
Next, the journals. Virginia bluebells bud pink and open blue along the Grand River floodplain, and every spring they come back – so the cover says SPRING COMES BACK, stamped in the lower corner, and the journals come in the bud's pale rose and the flower's navy.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
Then, ironweed. It stands taller than a person along the riverbank, violet at the crown, and it earned its name with a stem that refuses to bend. A good thing to hang your keys on – the keychains come in caramel and forest green.
And finally, the river itself. Main Street once crossed the Grand River on a steel through-truss, 350 feet in a single span – we drew the old bridge from the historic survey, panel by panel, and set GRAND RIVER beneath the waterline. It presses wide across the golden tan catchall tray, and small into the corner of the navy toiletry bag.
Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.
