Growing Season, Volume I-B – a Jennings, Louisiana leather study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies, this time in original designs.
A September study.
Volume I-B: Growing Season, a small collection of original stamps for rice country – Jennings, Louisiana, where the fall garden goes in just as everyone else is putting theirs to bed.
First, we crossed two stalks of rice, heads bowed with grain, and set JENNINGS above them and LOUISIANA below – the harvest saying the hometown's name. Deep green and honeyed russet tags take a blind press; the black tag carries the stamp in gold.
The same stamp rides the corner of the toiletry bag, warm tan over chestnut.
Next, we hung a birdhouse gourd from its cord and posted one word beneath the entrance hole – VACANCY. Any wren can read it. One fob in golden tan, the color a gourd dries to; the other in deep green.
Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
Then, for the catchall tray, we drew a live oak with moss in its limbs and set two words under the grass line – TAKES TIME. Everything worth growing does.
And finally, the one we liked the most. A seedling just clear of the ground, its root still at work below the line, and STILL GROWING written underneath – true of every gardener we know.
Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.
