Grown in Sand – a South Jersey leather stamping study
From the Practice Log – an ongoing series of leather stamping studies. Volume I-D.
A September study.
This one is called Grown in Sand – a small leather collection about the Pine Barrens, made for Voorhees and the towns around it. Everything out here grows in sand, and these did too.
First, the stamp the collection is named for. We stood a pitch pine on a thin line of sand and let its roots run below it, almost as wide as the crown – GROWN IN SAND, which is how the Pine Barrens raises everything, pines and people alike.
On the pale greige tag, the leather does the sand's work for it.
We also pressed it into the corner of the toiletry bags, one in warm country gray and one in dark espresso.
Next, we bent a cranberry vine into a ring around SOUTH JERSEY and let a handful of berries slip loose inside it – when the old bogs flood for harvest, the berries float.
Deep wine is the closest leather we keep to a cranberry, so it took the luggage tag and the first keychain; the second keychain went to warm caramel. Looks great when stamped onto the leather.
And finally, the one we liked the most. PINE BARRENS over a stand of cedars, and under the waterline the whole treeline again, upside down and sliced into ripples – the mirror the tea-dark water makes on a windless day.
It runs the length of the golden tan catchall tray, so the keys land on still water every evening.
On the journals it sits in the corner of the cover – deep forest green for the pines, and dark espresso, the nearest shade we have to that water itself. Looks absolutely gorgeous when stamped onto the leather.
And on the pale sea-blue luggage tag it travels lengthwise, so the reflection has room to lie flat.
